Description:

Housing near transit and job centers often comes at a premium and is usually affordable only to higher-income households. Yet it is lower-income households that benefit most from proximity to transit and jobs. Thus, providing affordable housing opportunities in such location-efficient areas is critical to creating equitable communities.

The challenge associated with creating and sustaining the affordable housing stock in these areas is significant.  Transit infrastructure often lasts for decades or even generations while the affordability periods for conventional affordable housing programs typically expire within 20 years. As a result, the subsidy amounts required to replace affordable homes in such areas become prohibitively large as the property values in transit-rich, location-efficient areas escalate over the long term.

Several regions across the country have effectively planned, promoted and incorporated long-term affordable homeownership programs into their community development efforts near public transportation, giving low- and moderate-income residents essential access to transit and job centers for decades to come.

Join us for a webinar that will highlight innovative affordable transit-oriented development initiatives across the country, including Austin, Texas and Fairfax County, Virginia – two jurisdictions that have put long-term affordable homeownership mechanisms into place to create and sustain equitable transit-oriented communities.  We will hear from a national housing and transportation policy expert, as well as affordable housing practitioners and advocates from the two jurisdictions as they discuss the partnerships, policies and strategies that made long-term affordability near transit possible.

  • Participate in the webinar: The two-part event begins at 2:30 p.m. Eastern (11:30 a.m. PST) with a 90-minute webinar that will provide an opportunity to listen to each speaker as well as ask questions.  Click here to register!
